Photo Bonanza

I went to visit my Great-Aunt Ree the other day for her birthday (happy 83rd!), and left with a present of my own: family photos.  She'd given me some before, mainly of her mother (my great-grandmother) and her siblings.  After this last visit, I now have another 60, plus four large albums that she let me borrow.

The first thing I decided to do was to go ahead, take the leap, and get a FlipPal scanner.  With these four albums, plus others from my mom's childhood that I still need to get scanned, I have more than enough work to get done.  I ordered the scanner on Wednesday and my USPS tracking says I'll get it tomorrow.  Fingers crossed!

After scanning all of the loose photos on my all-in-one, I decided that I wanted to organize these photos in a way that presented them better than inside an envelope inside a storage box.  I also wanted to present the photos in a way that was somewhat more contemporary to their creation.  There's not a single 4x6 photo in the bunch, so a modern album wouldn't work anyway.  So I made this:

I created this album using chipboard, archival safe card stock (paper), decorative scrapbooking tape, metal page corners, a decorative sticker, and a Bind-it-All machine. We already had the Bin-it-All and the corners, so the rest of it cost about $30 to make, which isn't any more than I might have paid for a large scrapbook album.

I filled the album with 25 pages of black card stock and am adhearing the photos using black photo corners.  I'm then lableing the photos using a white Uni-ball Signo pen.  I've loosely organized the photos chronologically by generation, with my Great-Great Grandparents first, followed by their children, then their children, etc.  I'm still debating on whether or not to add some newspaper clippings and letters that I have as well.

Barfield Family Photos

I still don't know who their father was, but I do have photos of them! I'm talking about my Great-Great-Great Aunts, Amanda and Josephine Barfield, sisters of my Great-Great Grandfather, William Barfield. I received these photos in my email today, after talking to a cousin on Facebook about the family.

That's Josephine Barfield Kitchen on the left (c1900) and Amanda Barfield Rich on the right (c1905). I'm excited to add these photos to my collection and to learn more about these women. Thanks to Betty, Loretta and Johnny for getting these photos to me.

What Year Was This?

I'd appreciate anyone who could help me find a date for these photos. I'm trying to figure out if one of the girls is my grandmother or great grandmother. The low quality of the photos is due to the fact that they are actually negatives.

Photos Used at GeorgiaInfo

When I go on vacation, I often like to go places that have historical significance and I generally take a lot of photos. I then place these photos on flickr. A few days ago, I received a message from web developers at GeorgiaInfo, a website developed by GALILEO and the University of Georgia Libraries. They had seen my photos of Andersonville Prison and wanted permission to use them on their site. Because of the educational purpose of the website, I agreed.

25 of my photos were placed on the website under the Georgia Historic Site Photos section. They are shown along with photos of other locations, such as Fort Pulaski, Jefferson Davis Historical Site, Wormsloe Plantation, and Warm Springs.

This website might be of interest to genealogy researchers who have ancestors in Georgia. They have pages devoted to genealogy links, information on demographics for each county, historic photos, and maps, both contemporary and historical.

We have a pack of negatives from my maternal grandparents side. Today I scanned them and reversed the images. They came out really well. The only thing: I don't know who these people are!

The package is marked Globe Photo Service, Greenville, SC. The customer's name looks like Paul Hand. It's written in pencil, and the photos are probably from the 40's, so it's hard to tell for sure. Here are some of the photos, let me know if you recognize them!

Add surname: Bond

Received some baby photos from my Granny that feature my father. As babies my sister and I looked exactly like my father did as a baby.
